dEATH AND fUNERALS IN JUDAISM
Prior to death, Jewish people wash the body. This is called Taharah. It is done by only specially trained people, but not all communities have these people. It is believed that the body should naturally decompose and should not be preserved or embalmed. Also, the coffin cannot have metal components, only wood because it needs to decompose.
In Judaism, people focus on life more than death. So when it comes to the funeral, there is no requirement of praying, going into the synagogue, or anything. Most people have a simple graveside funeral. The person must be buried as soon as possible, because Jewish people believe that the funeral must be completed on the day of death.
